Minneapolis lies on both banks of the Mississippi River, just north of the river’s confluence with the Minnesota River, and adjoins Saint Paul, the state’s capital.The name “Minneapolis”, meaning “Water City” in a mash-up of the Dakota word minne for water, and the Ancient Greek word polis for city. The motto “City of Lakes” refers to the city’s 22 natural lakes within city limits.
